Before renting

Renting a car is very simple, but as many people do not do it regularly, we have tried to explain a few things here.

To rent a car, we require double identification in the form of a valid driver's license + passport or ID card. These must all be in the same name. We reserve the right to request recent address identification. In addition, you must have a Dutch residence address. If one of the identification documents is not Dutch, the deposit must be paid by credit card. If you hold a foreign driver's license formatted in a non-Latin script, you should also bring an International Driving Permit (IDP). In addition, the driver's license must not be older than 10 years.

If you book online, you must always wait for it to be confirmed by us. During opening hours, we aim to do this within one hour. The earlier you book, the more likely it is that the desired car will be available. We only guarantee a minimum rental class, not a make and type, but try to provide this.

When the rental agreement is drawn up, a renter is specified. It is also permitted to specify additional drivers. These must be listed on the contact or the insurance company will not pay out in the event of a claim. In addition, the contractual deductible then lapses and the renter is liable for the entire damage amount.

More info can be found here.

Renters/drivers under 21 years of age can only rent A category passenger cars and K and L category vans. In addition, for renters/drivers under 24 years of age, the deductible amounts are doubled.

The rental rate includes VAT, insurance with standard deductible and driving the free kilometers. Excluded are the fuel costs, lowering of the deductible, extras and accessories, such as international coverage and additional drivers.

Yes, any car we rent out may be driven with a B driver's license, including all the cargo vehicles.

A security deposit must be paid to rent a car. The deposit depends on the type of rental car, length of rental period, age of the driver. The deposit can be reduced by lowering the deductible. A staff member can calculate this for you.

Deposit can be paid using your debit card or authorization on your credit card (Visa or Mastercard). For security reasons, we do not accept cash.

The car is all-risk insured (in-house) incl. personal accident occupant insurance, but you do have to pay a deductible in case of damage on a case-by-case basis if you return the rental car with damage that was not present upon pickup.

No, unfortunately this is not possible. We do not accept a debit or prepaid credit card to pay the deposit. This is because a debit or prepaid credit card must first be charged with a self-selected amount. Then you can pay with the card up to that amount. Being in the red is not possible. Moreover, it is not possible for us to refund the deposit to the debit card.

With a credit card it is possible to be in the red on the card. Also, we can both debit and refund on a credit card. So a real credit card offers us much more convenience and security.

During the rental

You may take our rental cars to almost all countries in Europe. However, you must notify us in advance as well as the countries to be visited. You are also required to take out insurance for replacement vehicles. For more information and the permitted countries, click here.

First of all, absolutely do not start the engine. If necessary, push the car to another spot. Call +31 88 99 60 111. Outside our opening hours, you will be put through to the emergency centre. They will make sure the tank is emptied so you can fill up with the right fuel to continue the journey.

Costs and any resulting engine damage are entirely the responsibility of the hirer/driver.

Call +31 88 99 60 111. Outside our opening hours, you will be transferred to the emergency centre. In case of damage, always fill in a damage form. Take photos and contact the police if necessary. For a detailed explanation click here.

In the event of glass damage outside our opening hours, call 088-1850500 (123RUIT.nl) or 0800-0828 (Autotaalglas).

The fine or decision is initially sent to us. In many cases, we send a notice of objection with the details of the tenant/drivers, after which the CJIB sends the decision to that person. You will receive an invoice from us for €12.10 incl. VAT (€10.00 excl. VAT) administration costs. In other cases, the fine amount will be passed on to you with an increase of €12.10 in administration costs. Please note that you always pay only the invoice amount to us.

The car may of course be returned clean, but this is not required. However, cleaning costs will be charged if the car is more dirty than can be expected with normal and reasonable use.

This can be done after consultation. In some cases, renting a specific car for longer may be difficult, but we will of course find a suitable solution. For longer rentals, you will have to pay a deposit at the branch. If you return the car earlier, you only pay for the days rented and the corresponding rate, provided this does not differ by more than a week from the number of days reserved.

No, there is absolutely no smoking allowed. A subsequent tenant is also likely to want to drive a fresh car. Upon detection of this, cleaning costs will always be charged with a minimum of €450. Costs for repairing burning holes in upholstery will be charged in full.

Pets are not allowed in the rental car. Upon detection of this, cleaning costs will be charged with a minimum of €450.

After renting

The hire car is always given to you with a full tank. The Leiderdorp branch has its own filling station. This means that you do not have to refuel the car yourself, but that we can do this for you. For this we charge the national recommended fuel price for that day with a surcharge of € 0.20 per litre. Our branches in Leiden, Alphen and Amsterdam do not have their own fuel pump. We therefore ask you to return the vehicle fully refuelled. We also ask you to show the fuel receipt or leave it in the car. However, should this refuelling not be possible, we will fill up the vehicle for you. We charge € 9.00 for this refuelling service in Leiden, Alphen and Amsterdam. See also Refuelling service.

We ask you to pay the deposit by debit card. This also means that the final settlement and refund of the remaining deposit will not be made in cash at the counter. We do not hold your money unnecessarily and refund the remainder of the deposit several times during the week (Mon-Fri). PLEASE NOTE: Processing at the bank can take up to 3 working days.

Yes, you can then deposit the key in the key safe next to the entrance. As we cannot check the car directly, you remain responsible for damage and/or theft until 2 hours after opening time.

In most cases, this is not possible. Only after consultation and permission of the branch where the car is rented is it possible, but only at one of the branches listed on this site.

Zero Emission Zones

That depends on the type of vehicle you hire. HuurMij offers both zero-emission vehicles and vehicles with combustion engines. To enter a ZEZ, you need an electric or otherwise emission-free vehicle. Please enquire at the time of booking whether the vehicle is ZEZ compatible.

You risk a fine from the municipality. HuurMij is not responsible for fines resulting from entering a ZEZ with an unauthorised vehicle.

You can check this on the official municipal websites or via platforms such as www.opwegnaarzes.nl. RentMij is also happy to help you with this during your booking.

The following 14 municipalities have already introduced an ZEZ from 1 January 2025:

Amersfoort, Amsterdam, Assen, Delft, The Hague, Eindhoven, Gouda, Leiden, Maastricht, Nijmegen, Rotterdam, Tilburg, Utrecht and Zwolle.
